A membranophone is any musical instrument that produces noise primarily through a vibrating stretched membrane.
Some are played with drum strick or hands.
Other ones are stroken or shaken.
And, for instance, the zambomba is played in a particular way, is rubbed.

The general characteristics of percussion instruments.
- The larger instruments produce the deeper sound.- Their characteristic timbre depends on the material they are made of : metal,wood,plastic,etc.
- The timbre is also modified depending on what we hit them with : sticks,hard or soft mallets,beaters,etc.
- Instruments with a very tight, stretched membrane produce a higher sound.
